The Flatshare | Beth O'Leary | Book Review

"There's so much here. Jokes, secrets, stories, the slow unfolding of two people whose lives have been changing in parallel - or, I don't know, in sync. Different times, same place."

- Tiffy, The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary

The Flatshare Book Review

Book Description

The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary is the story of two individuals - Tiffy and Leon - who end up sharing the same flat, and even the same bed. But the problem is that they don’t know each other and have never met. As the book progresses, their story unfolds in the most unconventional way. The novel traces their individual journeys as well as their journey as flat mates.

Book Review

Let’s be honest. The plot is pretty weird. I mean, what are the odds!?

The book is light and quick, quirky and clichéd. And definitely over-dramatic in places. But then again, what's a romance without a little bit of drama?!

In spite of the easy, casual feel of the book, it does a decent job in addressing certain serious relationship problems (some specific problems of a toxic relationship), which is quite relevant for many individuals across generations. The story is more than just romantic. It portrays all kinds of relationships and shows how these relationships define our lives - for good or for bad.

Another thing that I really liked about The Flatshare (except the smooth storytelling through perspectives; and Leon, of course!) is that it actually manages to portray the struggles of the characters in a realistic way.

Pros

The book is extremely easy to read and fast-paced.

Cons

The story is pretty much predictable, especially because of all the romance clichés. (But not for once did I want to stop reading it.)

Who Can Read It?

I guess this book is perfect for those hopeless romantics who'd sit in their balconies for hours watching the rain and humming to Prateek Kuhad songs. And at some point or other, we are all hopelessly romantic in our own ways. Aren't we?

P. S. Don’t go for The Flatshare if you are looking for something non-clichéd, less-dramatic romances.

Until next time.

XOXO
